LA JOLLA, California (March 2009) - Rising from an ancient coastal sandstone terrace near Torrey Pines State Reserve and the coastal village of La Jolla, The Lodge at Torrey Pines® pays homage to the California Craftsman style of the early 20th century. Designed in the tradition of architects Charles and Henry Greene, the Lodge carefully observes the Craftsman Movement's passion for honest materials and craftsmanship, respect for the natural landscape, and the integration of indoor and outdoor living. Most similar in style and details to the Greene's two California masterworks, the Gamble (1908) and the Blacker (1912) houses in Pasadena, The Lodge maintains the look and feel of a large residence in a beautiful setting. Randell Makinson, historian and well-known Greene & Greene expert, helped to insure the historical accuracy of the project. The Lodge features a powerful post-and-beam structure with authentic clinker brick foundation, metal strap and wedge joinery, expanses of stained glass, and broad roof overhangs with projecting outriggers and raftertails. The interior design by Kristine Smith Design Studio Interiors and interior architecture by Bill Hughes created a fin de siècle (early 1900s) ambiance combined with modern comfort, light and spaciousness. The hotel's lofty, timber-beamed lobby features tree-patterned stained glass that casts colorful dapples over the floors and walls. Living-room-like groupings of Arts & Crafts furniture, including many pieces by Stickley, add to the residential feel of The Lodge. Oriental rugs on the hardwood floors define comfortable gathering areas, and wooden rockers surround a large fireplace framed by art tile. The Lodge's fine art collection of landscapes painted en plein air by famed California Impressionists line the walls. In the hallways leading to the guest rooms, broad-hooded lanterns softly illuminate hand-rubbed wood paneling. The Craftsman ideal is extended to the guest rooms as well, where woodwork shows quality workmanship and complements an earthy palette of ochres, rusts, deep browns and evergreens. Wooden headboards, chairs, and chaise lounges feature fine inlaid Arts & Crafts motifs. Carpets and fabrics have been reproduced from original William Morris designs. The bathrooms retain the consistent design spirit, but respect the conveniences and luxuries today's travelers require. Basket-weave marble flooring, granite counters, deep soaking tubs, polished chrome period fixtures, and private water closets are featured in all guest bathrooms. All rooms fronting Torrey Pines Golf Course have fireplaces, while two Suites overlooking the 18th green feature more than 1,500 square feet of generous living area, enhanced by fireplaces and wide private balconies. The Lodge's signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, named after the well-known turn-of-the-century San Diego Impressionist painter, art pottery designer and botanical illustrator, offers an intimate fine dining experience in several small, well-crafted rooms and plush booths. In addition to cuisine that honors the freshest local sources of small-farm produce, seafoods and meats, the restaurant highlights the Lodge's extensive collection of original A.R. Valentien works, as well as select memorabilia from the artist's house and studio. Landscape architect Joni L. Janecki & Associates created a natural environment where indigenous California flora accent existing mature Torrey pines. The dictum of indoor-outdoor living so important to the Greene brothers is facilitated by expansive decks and brick patios, an outdoor pool and a whirlpool spa nestled among three pine trees overlooking the golf course and the Pacific. The Lodge at Torrey Pines® is a tribute to the California Craftsman Movement and is modeled after Greene and Greene's famed Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena, California, two of the finest examples of early 1900s Craftsman-style architecture. The Lodge features 170 spacious guest rooms, including 8 suites, more than 13,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, a 9,500 square-foot full-service spa and two restaurants serving contemporary California cuisine. The Lodge is adjacent to the Torrey Pines Golf Course and is within walking distance of Torrey Pines State Reserve. The Lodge at Torrey Pines® is owned and operated by Evans Hotels, San Diego.
